Quality of Antibodies & Correlates of Protection – Essential Tools for Evaluating Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza Vaccines

When investigating influenza vaccines, especially H5N1 and pandemic H1N1v vaccines, a wide selection of assays is available to measure the immune response. Besides determining which assay to choose, the next question is the level of antibody titers required for protection. During the symposium, we will briefly look back on the pandemic H1N1 strain experience explore what the various assays measure specifically and how they aid us in interpreting clinical data, as well as provide new data on correlates of protection for seasonal influenza.

Innovative Approaches to Improve Influenza Vaccination: Towards Tailor-Made Vaccines

Did the pandemic impact the perception of seasonal influenza? Which levers should be activated to improve vaccination strategies? Should specific vaccination approaches be implemented for each age-group? This symposium will address these questions and present the most recent vaccination developments including the first influenza intradermal vaccine: INTANZA® .

Antivirals: Pandemic Experiences, Seasonal Implications

Presentations from global experts:
• Benefits of antiviral therapy in pandemic (H1N1) 2009
• New data on early treatment of seasonal influenza in young children
• Facts about antiviral resistance

Faculty and participant discussion:

[18.00 – 20.00]
The Importance of Adjuvant Technology in the Battle Against Influenza

The recent pandemic highlighted the importance of enhanced influenza vaccines. New data have furthered the understanding of how MF59 increases immunogenicity and confirmed the safety and tolerability of MF59 in at-risk groups, including pregnant women. This symposium will explore the implications of these data in seasonal, pandemic and prepandemic settings.

Influenza: Eternal and Renewed

The symposium will deliver an opportunity to inform influenza experts from both academic and clinical backgrounds on recent developments in influenza illness. In particular, the programme will highlight: 1) current thinking on immunologic mechanisms of influenza viruses and of vaccines used to prevent illness; 2) new technologies for vaccine production and manufacturing, with emphasis on reverse genetics and the live, attenuated influenza vaccine; and 3) vaccination strategies for mitigating the impact of influenza illness, particularly the vaccination of healthy children.
